Project: EMPATH

2023
Final Year Thesis Project
Under the guidance of Prof. R. Brian Stone

Overview

We start to question the relevance of libraries in today. As we live through today’s digital age where information is readily available online, the role of libraries may seem uncertain.

Project: EMPATH is an exhibition series of interactive installations held in NUS Central Library, encouraging students to promote placemaking and inter-disciplinary engagement.

Placemaking in Libraries

Placemaking:
The process of proactively managing a place to improve its functionality and appeal.

As NUS students, we share a passion for the different disciplines we immerse ourselves in as our majors. However, making connections within our areas of interest can be challenging since we are physically compartmentalised in the safe spaces of our faculty buildings.

Rounds of ideation, iteration and user testing to develop the project idea further!

Project EMPATH is a 3-part exhibition that celebrates the power of collaboration across different disciplines. As visitors delve deeper into the library space, they will explore and experience collaborating with other individuals.

Driven by the metaphor of seeds to growth, visitors will embark on a journey of how small ideas can spark and bloom into collaborative projects that would not have been possible without the help of each individual seed planted.

Poster showcasing exhibition branding design

Branding and graphic work were a huge part of the project since this exhibition has to have the power to draw people in. It is key for placemaking that visitors take the initiative to contribute, so the designs had to be bold and eye-catching to pique passers-by’s interests.

Gradshow 2023

This project was featured in the 2023 Graduation Show. Designers who have participated in the exhibition were asked to set up a booth to showcase their projects, where I prepared a space for visitors to contribute to this project.

I would like to share some interesting contributions that some of the visitors have contributed, as they really testamented to how everyone approached ideas with unique perspectives :)
